Sony A7 + 50mm 1.8 FE no Phase AF
Sorry if this has already been covered. I'm using the Sony FE 50mm 1.8 (firmware 02) lens on my Sony A7 body (firmware 3.20) and I can't seem to make the lens use the camera's phase AF, just its contrast AF. According to Sony's lens compatibility chart Phase AF should be enabled for this combination after body firmware 3.10 already.
Did anyone have success in utilising the Phase AF?

Should work but remember that as you stop down past f/8 PDAF stops working with all lenses

How do you know that it doesn't use PDAF?

You have to use Continuous AF and not single AF. Its a ridiculously stupid bug, the kind of bug that makes Sony look stupid and drives people away from using their products.

I am able to use phase detect with that same setup and with single AF. I'm on firmware 3.20 + lens ver .02.

Because when focusing it goes back and forth before finding focus. If it was Phase AF it would just stop when it's in focus. And when I focus repeatedly at the same spot it shouldn't start to hunt for focus.

Yes it seems it might use Phase AF in Continuous AF mode but then I couldn't utilise the eye focusing which is really handy for portraits.
Do you know about other Sony lenses which seem to have the same 'bug'?

Thanks! This rectangle shows up on my A7 too but it's still contrast AF only hunting back and forth all the time to find focus.

Try AF-C and" Focus Area Wide" and wide open aperture, this should get you the small "dancing PDAF square points", If you get those then PDAF hardware/software in your A7+lens is working.
When using other "Focus area" types you don't get specific PDAF confirmation so you have no way of knowing weather hunting is due to PDAF or CDAF having difficulty as the final step in Sony's AF-C focusing algorithm is said to fine tune using CDAF ..
Lack of contrast or backlit scenes make it difficult for focusing system.
I often use back button AF as a workaround to stop micro-hunting if hunting is not extreme.
If troublesome I switch to DMF or MF.
Eye-Focus on first generation A7 does NOT work with PDAF/AF-C .. Eye-AF only works in AF-S using CDAF , so that is a separate question from your PDAF question.
Eye-AF on a6000, A7s, A7II is sensitive to the both distance and angle of the face so sometimes it does not locate the eye even if it is visible and close, I guess it's similar on A7.
A7R2, a6300, a6500 are capable of continous Eye-AF so that is a different ball game.
If you want demonstration of how CDAF and PDAF works on Sony works check these Gary Friedman videos

He is referring to the Sony E-mount camera bodies with pdaf. I think "bug" is a misnomer, though it takes some effort to understand E-mount af.
I'm sure it drives away those customers who think "pdaf" == "dslr autofocus" : )
